Gospel musicians want promotion from broadcast media – Mary Botul

Mary Botul said that they should always play Christian music on daily basis rather than on Sundays on their stations.

A veteran south Sudanese gospel singer, Mary Botul on Thursday urged the nation’s broadcast media to promote gospel singers on their stations on a regular basis.

Mary said that they should always play Christian music on daily basis rather than on Sundays on their stations.

Mary, popularly known as Mary Botul, told the News Agency of South Sudan  in Juba that gospel music in the country had become popular and continued to maintain its leading role, despite challenges.

“You see, the platform we choose to express ourselves, which is gospel is poorly encouraged. Few record labels operate as gospel labels and the non-gospel ones rarely sign-on gospel artists.”

“Also, Christian records in most cases are aired only on Sundays as radio DJs and music presenters on television stations hardly play gospel music during the rest days of the week.”

“What these tend do to us is that; we are left to do our own things on our own. We promote our own works, market it and all that. That is our major challenge as gospel music artists.”

“I know several talented gospel artists around who are truly gifted but don’t have the platform; and what’s more, corporate organizations that pay well do not invite us for events.”

“And Christians, who organize events, do not even pay well.”

“The broadcast media also do not support us with by playing gospel music even after working with the best producers and releasing the best videos.”

“It is almost like, ‘look there is no time for your message, “she said.

Mary said she believed South Sudanese  would be a better place if gospel artists whose works were supposed to communicate good morals and God’s messages of peaceful co-existence lived up to their callings.

“We know the country is bedeviled with corruption but with the right attitude gospel musicians can rise up and speak against it and perhaps point the society to the right direction,” she said.
