Zimbabwe Election Commission keen to avoid Kenyan situation

Zimbabwe’s election commission says it is keen to avoid a repeat scenario of what happened in Kenya where the presidential polls were nullified last week.

Speaking through its chairperson Justice Rita Makarau, the election body said it will conduct next year’s elections in accordance with the country’s electoral laws.

According to her, the success of the biometric voter registration exercise depends on the integrity of the electoral commission.

She was speaking at the opening of a BVR training workshop where she urged participants to follow the training they are being given strictly.

Her statements comes just days after opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai told an opposition rally alliance over the weekend that “if it happened in Kenya it could as well happen in Zimbabwe”.

Kenya’s Supreme Court nullified the August 8 election results citing irregularities in the transmission of vote results.
