Black artists flaunt talents via trending Twitter hashtag, Africans join the party

African artists jumped on the Twitter hashtag #drawingwhileblack to flaunt their talents as part of a campaign to appreciate black artists and give them the recognition they deserve.

The hashtag was started by a 19-year-old U.S.-based Ghanaian-American animator and illustrator Annabelle Hayford who is campaigning for more representation of black artists in the art industry.

She announced her campaign meant to appreciate black artists during the weekend of September 15 to 17.

This was a huge success with black artists all over the world posting their work and a short bio on Twitter with the hashtag #drawingwhileblack.

“I didn’t expect it to reach a global scale. I’ve seen artists from around the world, specifically in West Africa, share their work. It makes me really happy,” Hayford said in an interview with an American media.

“Art isn’t designed in a vacuum – it’s important to humanise artists and it’s important to let them be proud of their identity, especially in an industry where you don’t see artists like you. The art industry is small as it is,” she added.

Thousands of painters, illustrators, graphic novelists among other artists took part in the campaign and gained tens of thousands of retweets from lovers of their art.

The campaign went beyond the planned weekend as #drawingwhileblack keeps trending.

Below are some artists from Africa who deserve to be recognised.

Finally something I can join.
