2021 AFCON QUALIFIERS: South Sudan suffer 1-0 defeat in Malawi

The Bright
Star suffered defeat away to Malawi Flames in their opening Group B match in
the 2021 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on Wednesday.

South
African based Gabadinho Mhango netted the lone goal after 67 minutes at the
Kamuzu Stadium in Blantye to send Malawi top of the group.

Mhango who
features for Orlando Pirates in South Africa picked a cross from Gerald Phiri
Jr before beating two defenders and firing past goalkeeper Majak Mawith.

The South
Sudan team played a coordinated game, but failed to convert some of the opportunities
created.

“We need to
go back to the drawing board and sharpen the attack because we miss several
chances. But general our system of play was good and the players battled well,”
said South Sudan coach Ashu Cyprian Besong after the game.

The second
Group B game saw Uganda Cranes picked a vital point away in Burkina Faso after
the match ended goalless.

On November
17th South Sudan will host Burkina Faso in Khartoum, Sudan, while
Uganda host Malawi at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole in Kampala.
