Sugar-free Naartjie Loaf

A sugar-free yet sweet loaf to enjoy any day of the week. Not too tricky to make and full of vitamin c.


  • For the loaf:
  • 500 ml of Cake flour

  • 250 ml of Xylitol

  • 5 ml of Baking powder

  • 3 ml of Bicarbonate of soda

  • 2.5 ml of Salt

  • 200 ml of Milk

  • 150 gr of Melted butter

  • 2 Eggs

  • 5 ml of caramel or vanilla essence

  • For the syrup:
  • 4 Tablespoons of Xylitol

  • 3 Naartjies -juice and zest (about ½ cup of naartjie juice)


  • Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius and grease a standard loaf tin.
  • Sift the dry ingredients in a bowl and add the xylitol.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, butter, milk and add the essence.
  • Add the wet mixture to the flour and stir until well combined and smooth.
  • Transfer the mixture to the loaf tin and bake for 45 to 50 minutes until the loaf is cooked and golden.
  • While the loaf bakes, mix all the ingredients for the syrup in a saucepan and bring to the boil until the xylitol has dissolved.
  • Once the loaf has baked pour the syrup over the loaf as it comes out of the oven and allow to cool and enjoy.
