Majok Becomes First South Sudanese Police Officer In Nebraska

The Omaha Police Department has welcomed its first South Sudanese officer to the force. He graduated from the academy in March.

“It was something that has always been in the back of my mind. My late father was a police officer in back home in South Sudan,” said Muorter Majok.

Majok followed in his father’s footsteps to become a police officer. Since graduation, he has been training at the Omaha Police Department’s Northwest Precinct.

“This is just the first step. I hope other Sudanese apply to be a part of OPD,” said Majok.

Sudanese community leaders say Majok is leading by example.

“The young Southern Sudanese, they will listen to him. They will follow what he is doing because he has a connection,” said Dhanbeng Malual, translating for Sudanese community elder Chan Akot.

As an officer, Majok plans to connect with the Sudanese community and engage others to participate.

“Somebody who looks like them in the community and in OPD, they will really see that OPD is their police department,” said Majok.

“Since he was small, he’s been active in the community. I see that he will be a good leader for Omaha and for Nebraska,” said Malual for Akot.

The community is grateful for Majok’s call to serve.

“It’s been truly humbling,” said Majok.
