The government of Mozambique’s capital city Maputo distributed some 13,000 face masks to 4,500 vulnerable women and girls in the city’s markets to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on Friday.

The masks were supported by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), and the commercial bank BCI in line with the municipality’s Plan for Control and Prevention of COVID-19 in the city.

The beneficiaries are mainly vendors from the main markets in Maputo, the group of population that are also worst hit by the pandemic in the informal sector.
