Nigeria’s air force on Monday said it conducted air strikes against Boko Haram on 27 June in the northeast region of the country, neutralizing the militants.

A statement from the Nigerian Defence Forces said the attack was carried out after acquiring intelligence that the bases in Warshale in the Northern part of Borno State were being used to launch terror attacks.

“The NAF jets scored devastating hits in their multiple waves of attacks resulting in the destruction of several structures in the settlement as well as the neutralization of some of the terrorists,” said the statement attributed to John Enenche, the Major General Coordinator, Defence Media Operations.

“The Defence Headquarters equally urges them (Air Task Force) to intensify the air offensive against the terrorists and all other criminal elements threatening the peace and security of our beloved country.”

Boko Haram has waged a terror campaign in Nigeria for over a decade, killing tens of thousands and displacing millions of people.

Stopping the militant group remains a key agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari’s reign, a pledge he made in his presidential campaigns.

While the Nigerian forces have made progress in the fight to eliminate the militant group, it still manages to stage occasional attacks, often using suicide bombers.

In his statement on Monday, Maj Gen Enenche hailed the airstrikes as “another decisive blow on Boko Haram Terrorists.”
