South Sudan stop Zanzibar Queens 5-0


South Sudan’s national women’s team has made history by stopping Zanzibar Queens 5-0 at the on-going Cecafa Senior Women’s Championship in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The South
Sudan team making a debut in women’s football took a 2-0 lead at half time at
the Chamazi Stadium.

After 24
minutes Amy Lasu Luaya Lasu gave South Sudan the lead with a well taken free
kick that beat Zanzibar goalkeeper Hajra Abdalla Ali. South Sudan took a 2-0
lead with an own goal by skipper Abdallah Mwajuma.

Yussuf Hashim Sabahi tried to show her dribbling skills but failed to beat the
South Sudan defenders.

In the
second half Zanzibar came all out, but failed to break the South Sudan team.
Skipper Esther Luiz Elis scored the third goal off a corner after 62 minutes.

South Sudan
put Zanzibar under a lot of pressure before Chieng Thomas Manyol Riek dribbled
past the goalkeeper and slotted in the fourth goal.

Lasu scored hear
second goal of the day with a well timed header off a corner on 83 minutes.

coach Mohd Ali Salah said he was not so disappointed because the young team is
here to get experience. “This is a learning process,” he added.

Simon James Yor, the South Sudan coach was delighted with the win. “This is our first time in women’s football and our first win after losing the opening match 9-0,” said the coach.
