(JUBA) South Sudan’s country level domain .ss (dot ss) is finally operational. First launched in 2011, on the eve of the new county’s independence, the domain had been yet been added to the internet DNS root, rendering it inactive up till now.

Before the country seceded from Sudan, the country’s designated domain was .sd, which is still used by Sudan.

Speaking yesterday at a function to officially announce the activation of the domain service, director general Dr. Ladu Kenyi of the National Communication Authority (NCA) said the launch of the domain now opens up the country for easy access by the rest of the world.

The whole process to make the domain operational was financed by the government of South Sudan.

.ss (dot ss) is the designated country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for South Sudan in the Domain Name System of the Internet. just as .ke, .ug, .tz and .rw is for Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda respectively.

Country level domains uniquely distinguish a website name by associating it with a specific country, and in this case, the .ss domain will associate a website registered with the extension with South Sudan. Government organizations and multi national companies typically prefer to use country level domains.

The South Sudanese .ss country level domain was registered on 31 August 2011, but not added to the DNS root zone and thus not operational. It was approved at the ICANN Board meeting on 27 January 2019 and was added to the DNS root zone on 2 February 2019.

Before the country seceded from Sudan, the country’s designated domain was .sd, which is still used by Sudan.
