South Sudan’s national team got a rude welcome to the 2019 Cecafa Senior Women’s Challenge Cup falling 9-0 to defending champions Tanzania on Saturday.
The hosts took a 3-0 half time lead at the Chamanzi Stadium with Omary Mwanahamisi netting a brace and Donisia Minja scoring the other.
South Sudan who were making their first appearance in a women’s tournament tried to restrict the hosts to few goals with tight defending.
But the Tanzania team returned to attack in numbers as Mwanshamisi netted another before Abdallah Stumai scored a brace, while Julitha Tamuwahi and Clement Opa also got their names on the score sheet.
“It was a very difficult game for us because it is the first time we are competing in a women’s tournament. But this exposure is good for the women’s team,” said South Sudan’s coach Moses Machar Akol.
Tanzania now lead Group A with three points and a better goal difference than Burundi who beat Zanzibar 5-0 in an earlier game.
Action continues on Sunday with Group B matches as Ethiopia take on Kenya before Uganda Crested Cranes face Djibouti.
