The UN Secretary-General says the world body will launch a new strategy on youth to step up its work with and for the young people.
Antonio Guterres made this remark in his message on the International Youth Day which is observed every year on the 12th of August.
This year’s celebration was marked under the theme: “Safe spaces for Youth”.
The theme highlights the importance of having a safe space for the youth where they can engage in activities related to their diverse needs and interests, participate in decision making processes and express themselves freely.
In his message, the UN Chief, Antonio Guterres, said the UN believes that, making the world safe for young people, makes a better world for all people.
“I believe in the power of young people. Peace, economic dynamism, social justice, tolerance – all these and more, depends on tapping into the potential power of youth,” he said.
“Young people need education and opportunities, decent jobs, meaningful participation, a voice and a place at the table.”
For her part, the United Nations Youth Envoy – Jayathma Wickra-yamanayake said:
“The world’s young people need safe spaces where they can freely express their views and pursue their dreams – public, civic, physical and digital spaces.”
The International Youth Day was globally marked yesterday, but celebration in South Sudan is being held today in the capital, Juba, in partnership with UN Population Fund.
